A pair of vintage illustration portfolios by the British artist George Ernest Studdy (1878-1948), featuring his famous character Bonzo the dog. Included is the first volume titled The Studdy Dogs Portfolio, containing 15 plates in colours, and the second volume titled The Second Studdy Dogs Portfolio, containing 16 plates in colours. Both published by The Sketch at 172, Strand, London, W.C.2. The covers and internal artwork carry the printed signature of the artist and are dated 1922.
Condition report:
Both portfolios are in fair condition with significant signs of age and wear. The grey paper wrappers show heavy wear to the edges, including multiple small tears, creases, and losses to the peripheries. There is visible staining, foxing, and surface dirt present on the covers. The spines exhibit significant wear and some separation. Internally, there is evidence of foxing and tanning (toning) to the paper. The bindings appear fragile.
