Lot 398: Late 19th Century Wrought Iron Strapwork Garden Bench in the Arras Style

The auction will start in __ days and __ hours

Start price: £60

Buyer's Premium:

A wrought iron garden bench dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, designed in the Arras style. The bench features a continuous, contoured seat and backrest constructed from horizontal flat-iron strapwork slats. The frame is built with out-swept legs that terminate in characteristic scrolling feet. The entire piece is finished in a heavy, aged white paint. No manufacturer stamps, incised marks, or maker’s plates are visible on the frame or slats. A small paper adhesive label is present on the upper backrest which reads Lot 398.

Condition report:

The bench is in weathered, as-found condition, showing significant signs of long-term outdoor exposure. There is widespread flaking and peeling of the white paint layer throughout the piece. Surface oxidation and heavy rusting are present, notably on the seat slats, the underside of the frame, and the scrolling feet. Green algae and moss growth are visible on the lower sections of the legs. A central strap on the seat appears to have a compromised or detached bolt connection. The ironwork remains generally sound, though the piece would benefit from professional restoration.
