This Victorian brooch features a large, high-domed oval cabochon made of jet, a material traditionally used in mourning jewellery. The central stone is held in a rub-over bezel setting and is surrounded by a wide, silver-toned metal frame. The frame is decorated with a pierced openwork border depicting scrolling filigree motifs. The reverse of the brooch is constructed with a solid backing plate and is fitted with a simple pin and C-clasp mechanism. A faint, illegible rectangular mark is visible at the centre of the reverse plate, but the specific maker cannot be identified.
Condition report:
The brooch is in good vintage condition. The central jet cabochon shows several fine light scratches and minor surface abrasions across the polished dome, consistent with age and previous wear. The silver-toned metal mount displays significant tarnish and a dark, aged patina across the filigree work and reverse plate. The pin and clasp mechanism remain in functional condition.
