This 19th-century hand-coloured engraved map of Kirkby Kendal (now Kendal, Cumbria) was prepared by Lieutenant Robert Kearsley Dawson of the Royal Engineers. It was originally produced circa 1832 to accompany the reports of the Boundary Commissioners following the Reform Act of 1832, which sought to redefine parliamentary and municipal boundaries.The plate is inscribed R. K. Dawson Lieut R.E. at the lower left and Engraved by J. Hanshall at the bottom centre.
Condition report:
The paper displays even toning consistent with age. There is evidence of light foxing and minor creasing visible in the margins and towards the centre. The engraved lines and hand-colouring remain clear and well-preserved. The item has not been examined out of the frame.
