A cast iron fire basket, also known as a dog grate, of rectangular form designed in the Celtic Revival style. The piece features a slatted grate base supported by four feet. The side and rear railings are decorated with repeating scrolled C-shaped motifs and terminate in pointed finials at the rear. The front of the basket is flanked by two prominent uprights or andirons, each surmounted by a large open-work Celtic cross. These uprights feature a hammered-effect textured surface designed to emulate traditional wrought iron. The entire assembly is made of cast iron. No maker’s marks or stamps are visible. A paper lot tag numbered 396 is attached to the centre of the grate.
Condition report:
The fire basket is in a reclaimed, weathered state. There is significant surface oxidation and heavy rust present across the entire object. Despite the heavy surface corrosion, the casting appears structurally sound with no visible cracks, missing components, or repairs.
