This collection of infants wear includes several white cotton garments and a cream-coloured shawl, dating from the late 19th to the early 20th century. The assembly includes a full-length christening gown constructed from fine white cotton lawn or muslin, featuring a square neckline with a lace-inset yoke and long sleeves with lace-trimmed cuffs. The garment is decorated with floral broderie anglaise, eyelet embroidery, and cutwork to the front panel and hem, which is finished with a scalloped lace edge. Also included is a sleeveless under-slip made of white cotton with a gathered waist and lace trim around the neckline and armholes, featuring vertical lace-insertion panels to the bodice. Another garment in the group is a short-sleeved gown detailed with lace trim and a blue ribbon threaded through a lace band at the bodice; the skirt displays horizontal pintuck tiers and bands of decorative lace and broderie anglaise above a scalloped hem. The accompanying hand-knitted shawl is worked in a cream wool or wool-blend yarn with an intricate openwork lace pattern and a decorative scalloped border. No manufacturer labels or marks are present.
Condition report:
The garments show varying signs of age and wear consistent with their period. The long christening gown exhibits visible foxing and yellowish-brown staining, particularly to the lower half, though the fabric remains intact. The under-slip and short-sleeved gown appear in generally good vintage condition with fewer age spots, showing some creasing from storage. The shawl is in good condition with no significant staining or pulled threads observed.
